As an international educator, clinician and researcher Sarah Mottram continues to make significant contributions to the development and ongoing emergence of the ‘Movement Health’ philosophy, now endorsed by influential organisations and individuals within the movement based field. This desire to place movement at the heart of all movement therapists’ patient and client management strategies is evident through her role as Director of Movement Performance Solutions (MPS) and the range of education and business development services this company offers.

A long term, close collaboration with Mark Comerford has led to the ongoing success and refinement of the world renowned Kinetic Control (KC) brand. This route of movement education is becoming ever more relevant as movement analysis and retraining is increasingly valued and adopted. When asked about the goals of Kinetic Control, Sarah replied, ‘it’s not about treating pain, it’s about management of people with pain… and movement analysis is the base of that. We want clients to move better, feel better and do more.’ The Elsevier publication ‘Kinetic Control- The Management of Uncontrolled Movement' (Comerford & Mottram, 2012) is a valuable resource for clinicians wishing to expand and enhance their knowledge in this field .

Sarah and Mark have also harnessed the systemisation of analysis and retraining to its current state of the art height in the production of ‘The Performance Matrix’. This process, the culmination of two decades of development now supplies the foundation for the principal movement management system on the global market, the TPM Pro and elite consultancy, TPM Elite.

Sarah’s own consultancy within elite sport has allowed her to work closely with English Premier League teams, integrating movement analysis and retraining into their broader player management. Leading to great results both on and off the pitch, this relationship continues to flourish and support further research and refinement of the MPS products and services. Such experiences and her twenty years plus of clinical practice have allowed the influence of Garuda, Pilates, and Gyrotonic to be moulded in to a multi-disciplinary expertise in the teaching of movement, combined with incredible exacting eye for movement quality.

In addition to the KC text, her publications have provided the basis for much of what has followed with regards to movement control, risk analysis and muscle classification over the past fifteen years. Sarah is a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton. Her research is exploring healthy musculoskeletal function and movement health in people across the activity spectrum from elite sports men and women, active people older people and those with musculoskeletal pain. She has a particular interest in the assessment and retraining of uncontrolled movement of the scapula and how this influences neck and shoulder pain, and function. This area of scapular impairment forms the main topic of her research publications, Sarah’s interests also include finding accurate and reliable ways of assessing the mechanisms of movement dysfunction in the clinical environment that reflect abnormalities in the biomechanics of movement and neurophysiology of movement control.
